What is DUO?

 

 

DUO is a cloud-based service from Cisco that provides Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

One of the most important security measures to protect users is the use of multi-factor authentication.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) means that when you sign in using a username and password, you must also verify your identity in an additional way.

With DUO, users can authenticate by:

  • Approving a push notification in the DUO Mobile app
  • Receiving an SMS
  • Receiving a phone call

 

 

 

 

Setting Up DUO for a Hosted User

 

 

User Management (Admin Access)

User management is handled through My Pages (Mínar síður).

Note: Administration is always tied to the company ID (kennitala) that the DK license is registered to.

 

 

Enable Administration

 

 

Before you can manage users, you must enable multi-factor authentication:

  1. Click “Send code”
  2. A verification code will be sent to your email
  3. Enter the code and click “Verify code”

 

 

Manage Users

 

Once administration is enabled, you can manage company users.

Under the “Information” tab you can:

  • Edit the user’s name
  • Enable and update email address
  • Enable and update phone number

These details must be filled in to activate multi-factor authentication for the user.

 

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

 

  1. After adding a phone number to the user, click “MFA”
  2. Select “Enable” to start activation
  3. Give the device a name and click “Create”

The employee will then have three options to activate DUO on their phone:

  • SMS
  • Email
  • QR code

 

All three options will:

  • Open the DUO Mobile app, or
  • Redirect to App Store / Play Store if the app is not installed
  • Automatically activate the connection for the user

 

After Activation

Once DUO is activated:

  • The device status will show as active
  • Users are expected to allow DUO to send notifications

During login:

  1. Enter username and password
  2. Approve the login by tapping “Allow” in the DUO Mobile app

A push notification appears once the correct username and password have been entered.

 

 

 

Approving Login in the DUO App

After DUO setup is complete, users must approve each login using the DUO Mobile app.

If a push notification does not appear automatically:

  • Open the DUO Mobile app manually
  • Approve the login request there

 

Fixing Missing Notifications

iOS (iPhone)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Notifications
  3. Scroll down and select Duo Mobile
  4. Tap Notifications
  5. Make sure “Allow Notifications” is enabled
    • If already enabled, try turning it off and on again

Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Apps or Apps & Notifications
  3. Choose DUO Mobile
  4. Open App notifications
  5. Make sure notifications are enabled

If notifications still do not appear:

  • Restart the DUO Mobile app
  • Try again
